四、祕密教者，《大智論》云「佛初成道，鹿苑轉四諦法輪。顯露教中，明五人見諦，得須陀洹果，八萬人得法眼淨；祕密教，無量菩薩聞說大乘，得無生忍。復次，始從得道，至泥洹夜，常說般若」，或可即其義也。此經云「佛以一音演說法，眾生隨類各得解」，此亦是祕密教之相。若時眾皆不得聞見，即是祕密教也。

Fourth, the esoteric teaching: the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states, "When the Buddha first attained the Way, he turned the wheel of the Dharma of the four truths in the Deer Park. In the manifest teaching, it clarifies that five people saw the truths and attained the fruit of srotāpanna, and eighty thousand people attained the purification of the Dharma-eye; in the esoteric teaching, immeasurable bodhisattvas heard the Mahāyāna taught and attained anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti. Furthermore, from the time he first attained the Way until the night of parinirvāṇa, he constantly expounded prajñā." Perhaps this is its meaning. This sūtra states: "The Buddha expounds the Dharma with a single voice, and sentient beings each understand it according to their type." This too is a characteristic of the esoteric teaching. If the assembly at that time cannot hear or see it at all, that is the esoteric teaching.
