First, in explaining the three contemplations of distinctive characteristics: Contemplating the principle of the three truths produced from causes and conditions has distinct and different characteristics. The coarseness and subtlety of the three kinds of delusive hindrances—grasping at characteristics, [delusions as numerous as] the Ganges sands, and fundamental ignorance—have different stages. In contemplating the principle and refuting delusion, the application of wisdom differs; hence they are called the three contemplations of distinctive characteristics. These are precisely the characteristics of the three wisdoms explained in the 'Chapter on the Threefold Prajñā' of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. Now, in explaining these three contemplations of distinctive characteristics, there are three distinct parts: first, the contemplation of entering emptiness from the provisional; second, the contemplation of entering the provisional from emptiness; third, the contemplation of the middle way as paramārtha-satya.
