The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "The twelve links of dependent origination were not made by buddhas, devas, humans, or asuras; their nature is just so." The Buddha's four modes of teaching are all skillful means of the siddhāntas, entering the provisional to benefit beings. Yet sentient beings, confused and uncomprehending, either cling to the four extremes of the outsiders' perverse doctrines, or cling to the four extremes in the Buddhist sūtras and treatises, giving rise to dogmatic attachments. Therefore the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "Prajñā is like a great mass of fire; the four sides cannot be grasped, or one is burned by the fire of wrong views." Now we explain that according to whatever view is grasped, that is suffering and the origin; if one can understand suffering and eradicate the origin, one must cultivate the path and realize cessation. All these are known as provisional names, like illusions and transformations.
