Second, explaining the name "shared teaching": "shared" means identical. Because the three vehicles receive it in common, it is called "shared." This teaching explains the principle that causes and conditions are identical to emptiness and the four noble truths of non-arising; it is the entry-door to the Mahāyāna teaching. It is primarily for bodhisattvas, and secondarily encompasses the two vehicles. Therefore, the "Exhortation to Learn" chapter of the *Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* explains: "Those who wish to study the three vehicles should all be taught to study prajñā." That which is called "shared" has multiple aspects, but eight meanings are briefly set forth: 1. shared teaching; 2. shared principle; 3. shared wisdom; 4. shared severance; 5. shared practice; 6. shared stages; 7. shared cause; 8. shared fruit.
