These three teachings are collectively called "collections" (*piṭaka*); "collection" takes "containing and storing" as its meaning. However, commentators differ: some say, "Because the text can contain the principle, it is called a collection"; others say, "Because the principle can contain the text, it is called a collection." We now say that the names of these three teachings are each a distinct clause. Because each of the three names contains both text and principle, they are called collections. The *Āgamas* are the concentration collection, hence it is said that they "seek in sequence"; the *Vinaya* is the precept collection, hence it is said that it "seeks through causes and conditions"; the *Abhidharma* is the wisdom collection, hence it is said that it "seeks through nature and characteristics." Because this teaching definitively pertains to the Small Vehicle, the *Lotus Sūtra* says: "Greedily attached to the Small Vehicle, students of the Tripiṭaka."
