Third, explaining the name "distinctive teaching": "distinctive" is a designation for what is not shared. This teaching is not spoken in common with persons of the two vehicles, but teaches only bodhisattvas, and is therefore called the "distinctive teaching." This teaching explicitly clarifies the provisional designations of causes and conditions and the principle of the immeasurable four noble truths. It definitively transforms bodhisattvas and does not involve the two vehicles. That which is called "distinctive" has many aspects in its meaning, but eight senses are briefly set forth: 1. distinctive teaching; 2. distinctive principle; 3. distinctive wisdom; 4. distinctive severance; 5. distinctive practice; 6. distinctive stages; 7. distinctive cause; 8. distinctive fruit. Hence it is called the distinctive teaching.
