Answer: If one uses the distinctive to connect with the shared, the ten grounds and virtual enlightenment are themselves the buddha-wisdom of bodhi. Why so? The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "The bodhisattvas of the nine abodes are said to see by hearing; the bodhisattvas of the tenth abode are said to see by eye." Although they see buddha-nature, they do not see it distinctly. Because the unimpeded path coexists with defilement, they do not see it distinctly. The distinct seeing of all Tathāgata-buddhas is true liberation, serenely beyond all burdens; therefore it is distinct. If explaining the meaning according to the distinctive teaching, from the initial Joyous [Ground] one immediately uses the buddha-wisdom of bodhi to sever the first grade of ignorance, and only up to the final mind of virtual enlightenment is it finally severed completely. If explaining the meaning according to the perfect teaching, at the first abode of initial aspiration one attains the buddha-wisdom of bodhi and severs the first grade of ignorance, and only up to the final mind of virtual enlightenment is it finally severed completely.
