Second, explaining the [remaining] nine abodes by analogy: just as in this initial abode the threefold contemplation is present before one and through an effortless mind one severs in every thought immeasurable, innumerable grades of ignorance of the dharma-realm, broadly speaking they are summarily classified into ten grades of wisdom and severance, which constitute the ten abodes. Hence the Renwang jing says: "Entering prajñā of the principle is called 'abiding.'" This means ten stages of progressively advancing and giving rise to uncontaminated true clarity, together entering the principle of the middle way, buddha-nature, and paramārtha-satya; by means of non-abiding dharmas, from shallow to deep, one abides in the principle of the Buddha's three virtues of nirvāṇa; this is the ten grades of wisdom abiding in all buddhadharmas, and therefore they are called the ten abodes.
