Answer: If one contemplates the principle of absolute truth and gives rise to absolute wisdom, this is wisdom of arising and ceasing; therefore, in this sūtra Vimalakīrti rebukes Kātyāyana, saying: 'Do not explain the dharma of the true mark with a mind of arising and ceasing.' If one perceives the principle of the Middle Way and gives rise to wisdom, this is wisdom without arising and ceasing; therefore the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'That which the buddhas take as master is the Dharma. Because the Dharma is eternal, the buddhas are also eternal.' That the buddhas are also eternal is precisely the eternal wisdom of unarisen quiescent illumination.
