Question: If the bodhisattvas of the previous two teachings are not called sattva, how do they differ from the two vehicles? Answer: Having a little compassionate aspiration and practice, they differ from the two vehicles. The bodhisattvas of the four teachings are fully explained in the Profound Meaning. This sūtra mostly explains the praise of virtues through the perspective of the three Mahāyāna teachings; not using the Tripiṭaka teaching is because it is not the primary intent of the Mahāyāna. It is sometimes cited precisely to contrast and determine the difference between the great and the small. Clarifying the bodhisattva through the contemplation of mind is distinguished according to the threefold contemplation. Analyzing or realizing the essence to enter emptiness and giving rise to great compassion is also called a bodhisattva; cultivating the latter two contemplations is spontaneously the meaning of a bodhisattva.
