問：聲聞可爾，菩薩云何？答：《華嚴》明菩提心魔、三昧魔、善知識魔，皆菩薩魔也。鴦掘魔羅訶文殊云「外道亦修空，尼乾但默然」，即是界外外道。若不爾者，何故八千被呵不能加報？若約觀心者，假空空假觀成，降伏界內魔外；假中中假觀成，降伏界外魔外。

Question: This may be so for śrāvakas, but what about bodhisattvas? Answer: The Avataṃsaka explains the māra of bodhicitta, the māra of samādhi, and the māra of good spiritual friends—these are all bodhisattva māras. Aṅgulimāla rebuked Mañjuśrī, saying: "Non-Buddhists also cultivate emptiness; the Nirgranthas merely keep silent"—these are precisely non-Buddhists beyond the realms. If that were not so, why were the eight thousand rebuked without being able to make a reply? In terms of contemplation of mind: when the contemplations of provisional-into-empty and empty-into-provisional are accomplished, they subdue the māras and non-Buddhists within the realms; when the contemplations of provisional-into-middle and middle-into-provisional are accomplished, they subdue the māras and non-Buddhists beyond the realms.
