Question: Within the realms there may well be māras and non-Buddhists, but how could there be any beyond the realms? Answer: The Great Sūtra speaks of eight māras: four internal and four external. The Avataṃsaka's ten māras apply both within and beyond the realms, and their distinctions can be understood. In the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], Kāśyapa lamented himself, saying: "Prior to this, everything was called wrong view." Thus the noble ones of the three vehicles in the Tripiṭaka and Shared [Teachings] are all called māras and non-Buddhists beyond the realms. Therefore he rebuked Subhūti, saying: "Entering wrong views and not reaching the other shore, you and the māras and non-Buddhists act as one." How is it not the case that there are māras and non-Buddhists beyond the realms?
