Second, clarifying the common and specific: This gathers the preceding three to form the common and specific. The six conditions such as 'thus' are the common preface; manifesting auspicious signs and the prefatory narration combine to form the specific preface. Sūtras commonly take the six conditions as their head, hence it is called the common preface. At the beginning of the various sūtras, the manifestations of auspicious signs differ and the prefatory narrations are distinct, each indicating and initiating something, hence called the specific preface. Now, because of the specific name, there is a specific preface and a specific verbal teaching; if because of the common name, there is a common preface. The commonality and specificity of practice and principle give rise to these two prefaces on this basis.
