Third, regarding "if one enters this gate, one does not rejoice upon seeing purity, nor does one grieve upon seeing defilement": this interprets the second point above, on subduing sentient beings to grasp a buddha-land. The buddhas, solely to gently subdue all hard and weak people, show defilement and purity; how could one see this purity and defilement and give rise to thoughts of high and low, grief and joy? If the mind has grief and joy, it is not called subdued; freedom from grief and joy is the sign of being subdued. For example, a skilled physician, in order to cure illness, administers sweet and bitter medicines; although the medicines differ, the curing of illness is no different. If one sees this physician prescribing two kinds of medicines to heal illness, one does not give rise to hatred or affection toward the physician. The Buddha is also like this: solely to subdue sentient beings, one must not look upon purity and defilement and harbor doubts.
