Fourth, from "the buddhas are equal" onward, this interprets the first point above, that the buddhas grasp buddha-lands in order to teach and transform sentient beings. Here it explains that the merits of the Tathāgatas of the ten directions are equal: one body and one wisdom, and their powers and fearlessnesses are likewise so. Since they are equal, how could one buddha-land suddenly be pure and another buddha-land defiled? Since defiled and pure differ, how can they be called equal? It is merely to teach and transform sentient beings that, within equality, they arouse compassion and act with equality and inequality; it is for transforming sentient beings that there come to be differences between defiled and pure. Interpreting and completing the meaning of the four kinds of lands above without the slightest contradiction or distortion testifies that the reaffirmation of the fundamental theme proclaims and summarizes from beginning to end, accomplishing the preceding and following meanings of pure buddha-lands.
