Fifth, the assembly's generating the mind and cultivating practice, which has two parts: first, generating the mind, and second, making vows. That there were fourteen nayutas who were immediately awakened is because the various teachings and various supernatural transformations described above were coming to the close of the main teaching section; displaying this pure land, they all received the Tathāgata's exhortation and inspiring impulse, so that fourteen nayutas attained awakening all at once. Second, regarding the vows: pure practice is profound and subtle, not easy to discern; making a vow to be born there and cultivate practice there, here the Buddha's prophecy means that they certainly shall be born there. The receiving of prophecy has two aspects: first, distant, and second, immediate. If, having made the vow, one is certain to be born there, that is an immediate prophecy. If cultivating the causes of pure practice is certain to bring about the result of a pure land, like that buddha-land, that is a distant prophecy.
