"[The practice of] the ten good deeds [leads to being born in] that land": There are two kinds of the ten good deeds: first, refraining; second, active performance. Here it refers to refraining from the ten non-virtuous actions, and there are also five types: first, the concrete ten good deeds, which are practiced by ordinary beings. The latter four pertain to the bodhisattvas of the four teachings practicing them themselves, teaching others, praising them, and rejoicing in them. When they subsequently attain Buddhahood, beings of the five types of the ten good deeds come to be born in their lands. Life not being cut short prematurely is non-killing; great wealth is non-stealing; pure conduct is non-sexual misconduct; words spoken being truthful and sincere is non-false speech; always speaking with gentle words is non-harsh speech; retinue not being separated and skillfully resolving disputes is non-divisive speech; speech being invariably beneficial is non-frivolous speech; absence of jealousy is non-covetousness—jealousy is an impurity of anger, but here it is treated under greed because jealousy arises on account of greed; non-wrath is non-anger; right view is non-delusion. The provisional and real, as well as the various other meanings, are all analogous to the straightforward mind.
