"Guarding oneself... name of [violating the precepts]": According to the four teachings there are also four kinds. Guarding oneself without criticizing others should be treated in four alternatives: 1. not guarding oneself yet criticizing others; 2. guarding oneself and not criticizing others; 3. guarding oneself yet criticizing others; 4. neither guarding oneself nor criticizing others. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: "Even if three sons die from the rod, if there is one remaining son, he must be sternly disciplined." How could one completely refrain from criticizing others? Provided there is no malice within and it is definitely beneficial to others, it is not that one never criticizes at all. It is only that one perceives the four types of criticism without error. The provisional and real, along with the various meanings, are analogous to the straight mind.
