In terms of the teachings: the Tripiṭaka buddha-mind has no residual habit-energies; therefore it is called "mind pure." Through the four dhyānas and four formless concentrations, practicing contemplation, smelting, perfuming, and cultivation, it is forever free from attachment to dharmas; therefore it is called "already crossed beyond." Yet its powers and fearlessnesses cannot illuminate equally. The Shared teaching buddha-mind illuminates the utmost source of the true truth, its habit-energies within the realms exhausted; it has unimpeded mastery in the various dhyāna concentrations, and its ten powers and fearlessnesses illuminate objects all at once; therefore it is called "already crossed beyond." In the Separate teaching, conditioned cultivation of wisdom reveals the mind of inherently pure nature, and the twelve grades of ignorance are ultimately and permanently extinguished. The Bodhisattvabhūmi explains nine kinds of great dhyānas; the bodhisattva, relying on the ninth, the pure dhyāna, attains the fruition of great bodhi, transcending the pure [dhyāna]; therefore it says "already crossed beyond." This refers to cultivating the inherent-nature dhyāna prior to the stages (bhūmis). Ascending the stages, one attains all dhyānas, up to equal awakening, where one abides in pure dhyāna, severing the eleventh grade of ignorance to enter the profound gate of multiple obscurities; this is called pure dhyāna. The buddha-fruition transcends this; therefore it says "already crossed beyond." In the Perfect teaching, the purity of the six faculties is itself inherent-nature dhyāna; the first dwelling of initial bodhicitta is itself all dhyānas, having already ultimately left falsehood behind and revealed the mind of inherently pure nature; and so on up to pure dhyāna breaking the forty-one grades of ignorance to abide in the stainless ground. The Tathāgata's mind is pure, crossing beyond these dhyāna concentrations to ascend to the fruition of wondrous awakening; therefore it says "already crossed beyond." Hence the Suvarṇaprabhāsa says: "At that time, the Tathāgata roamed in the immeasurable, extremely profound Dharma-nature, surpassing the purity practiced by all bodhisattvas." The Yingluo jing explains that in the past, in the Avataṃsaka assembly, those of the eight dhyānas were gathered, and for these eight dhyānas [the Buddha] expounded the Avataṃsaka, enabling them to enter pure dhyāna and abide in the stainless ground. Common scholars of old merely took this to mean the four dhyānas and four formless concentrations; yet when the Avataṃsaka was expounded, even the śrāvakas were like the deaf and mute—how could non-Buddhists of the eight dhyānas have been gathered? If in terms of contemplation of mind, with the single mind's threefold contemplation, the mind of each and every sentient being is itself the Tathāgata's mind, fundamentally pure in nature; therefore it says "mind pure." Being able to cross beyond phenomenal dhyāna, it is said to have "already crossed beyond."
