"Devas and humans attained the Way": devas refers to the eighty thousand devas; humans refers to the five people including Kauṇḍinya. The five people heard the Dharma and initially attained the vision of the truths; the eighty thousand devas attained purity of the Dharma eye. Some say: 'Kauṇḍinya was the first to attain the Way; the four people attained it only at the beginning of the summer [retreat].' This is likely due to differing accounts in various sūtras and treatises. This sūtra explicitly says, 'Devas and humans attained the Way, and the Three Jewels appeared in the world'; if the four people had not attained the path of vision, that would not be attaining the precepts through seeing the truths. If it were Kauṇḍinya alone, he would not be called the Saṅgha jewel. This serves as proof that the Dharma expounded by the Buddha accords with principle and accords with capacities, unlike the six masters whose false teachings could not enable people to attain the Way.
