From "Now we offer to the World-Honoured One" down, spanning nineteen lines, is the second [part], which properly relates and praises the events that manifest and inaugurate [the teaching]. The text has two [sections]: first, four lines generally relate and praise the manifestation of the three omens that inaugurate [the teaching]; next, fifteen lines separately relate and praise the Buddha's three secrets. The first [section] has three [parts]: first, half a line relates and praises the offering of the parasols; next, two and a half lines properly relate and praise the merging of the parasols and the manifestation of the omens that inaugurate [the teaching]; third, one line properly relates and praises the great assembly's rejoicing. In the first part, "offering humble parasols": "humble" speaks of being small; small causes [bringing] great fruits manifests the inconceivable great fruition, and the pure lands are without fixed direction and unfathomable. From "Manifesting the three-thousandfold [world]" down, spanning two and a half lines, the next part relates how within the merged parasols lands were manifested and buddhas were manifested preaching the Dharma, which manifests and proclaims matters concerning the response lands and the response body. "Compassionately manifesting": out of compassionate mindfulness for sentient beings, he wished to preach for them this cause and fruit of the buddha-lands; therefore he first manifested omens as a preliminary step so that he could then open and elucidate it; hence it is called "compassionately manifesting".
