From "At that time the elder's son..." down to the end of [Chapter 12,] "Akṣobhya Buddha", comprising eleven and a half chapters, is the second [major division]: the main teaching section. The text has three [parts]: first, the half-chapter of "The Buddha-Land" is the Great Sage addressing capacities and stating the principal theme to explain the cause and fruit of the buddha-lands; second, from [Chapter 2,] "Skillful Means", down to [Chapter 10,] "Accumulated Fragrance", comprising nine chapters, the Great Being assists the Buddha in elucidating [the teaching], explaining the cause and fruit of the buddha-lands of inconceivable liberation; third, from [Chapter 11,] "Bodhisattva Practice", down to [Chapter 12,] "Akṣobhya", comprising two chapters, Vimalakīrti brings the great assembly back to the Āmrapālī Grove, where the Tathāgata, confronting the great assembly, reiterates the principal theme to explain the cause and fruit of the buddha-lands. Why did the Tathāgata respond to capacities and answer Ratnakūṭa's request to explain the environmental reward? Because earlier, when all assembled, he explained the cause and fruit of the primary reward. Why did Vimalakīrti assist the Buddha in expounding [the teaching], supporting and bringing to completion the Buddha's explanation of the cause and fruit of the buddha-lands of inconceivable liberation to inspire and awaken those who had the affinity? It is like a government minister receiving an imperial decree to educate the people. Why did they return to the Āmrapālī Grove, where the Buddha fully clarified the buddha-lands before the great assembly? It is like a great minister opening up territory for the state, who, upon completing the matter, returns to court, where the Sovereign is pleased and sets his seal of approval.
