Question: Vimalakīrti earlier rebuked [the disciples]; how could that assist in bringing this teaching to completion? Answer: When the Buddha had not yet preached the cause and fruit of the buddha-lands, Vimalakīrti rebuked them in advance, tacitly tallying with the Buddha's intent and assisting in completing the present teaching; how could this not be permissible? In worldly state administration, affairs beyond the palace gates are decided by the general; as long as they accord with the Emperor's will, why must he await a decree? When the disciples merely recounted the past, the Tathāgata silently confirmed it, which distantly tallied with the Buddha's mind; how is this not assisting in completing the present teaching? Therefore, the rebukes of former days generally assisted [the teaching on] the primary reward, and today's retelling brings to completion the present [teaching on] the environmental reward.
