"Attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas": this single line is the second, praising the high status of the dharmakāya, like the high status of a worldly householder. Why so? In the round teaching, the initial dwelling and the first ground are fully endowed with the merits of all grounds; this meaning is still general. Now, Vimalakīrti was either said to be the Tathāgata Golden Grain, who had already attained the superior forbearance of extinction; or said to reside at the stage of Equal Enlightenment, having attained the intermediate forbearance of extinction; or said to reside at the Dharma Cloud stage, having attained the lower forbearance of extinction. If he resided in the intermediate or lower, fundamental ignorance was already severed, and there were only minute residual habits that could not drag him into birth; this is called the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas, which is high status. The reason he did not accept the name "forbearance of extinction" was precisely out of deference to the Buddha, [thus] only [claiming] the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas.
