Now, explaining Vimalakīrti's intent in feigning illness to inaugurate the teaching, there are four passages of sūtra text, which broadly divided make two sections: First, from here down through the exposition of the "Bodhisattvas" chapter, comprising two and a half chapters, is the expounding of the Dharma outside the room, clarifying rebuke and subjugation. Second, from the "Inquiring After the Illness" chapter onward, comprising six chapters, is the expounding of the Dharma inside the room, clarifying guiding and embracing; through these causes and conditions the true Dharma is made to abide long, which is precisely abiding in the inconceivable liberation. Within subjugation, embracing is fully contained, and within embracing it is likewise; it is only that the meanings have primary and secondary aspects. Now, concerning subjugation outside the room, the text has three parts: first, this half-chapter clarifies subjugating the conditioned accumulation of conditions within the realms; second, the "Disciples" chapter subjugates the unconditioned accumulation of conditions; third, the "Bodhisattvas" chapter subjugates the intrinsic nature of the dharmadhātu's accumulation of conditions.
