Question: Are the unconditioned and the intrinsic nature the same or different? Answer: Various explanations differ; here we state that their names are distinct but their essence is the same. The two vehicles, confused about the intrinsic nature, give rise to attachment to the unconditioned; having become attached to the unconditioned, it receives the name of "unconditioned." Bodhisattvas are also confused about the intrinsic nature and give rise to the unconditioned accumulation; however, bodhisattvas contemplate and break through the unconditioned, but because the unconditioned is not yet exhausted, this delusion adheres to the essence, and therefore separately receives the name of "intrinsic nature." Just as ordinary people, confused about the real, give rise to the conditioned accumulation of conditions, while learners have severed view-[delusions] but have not yet exhausted thought-[delusions], so with regard to true principle there are still the names of defilement by the form and formless [realms].
