Question: Vimalakīrti's traces dwelt in the human realm, so he could be like ordinary people in having concrete illness, and internally be like bodhisattvas in having the illness of intrinsic nature; since he is not of the two vehicles, how could he be like them in having unconditioned illness? Answer: Vimalakīrti abides in the inconceivable; to those who should be saved by a body of the two vehicles, he manifests all of them and shares their illness. Furthermore, manifesting the illness of a bodhisattva of the shared teaching shares the meaning of manifesting illness with the two vehicles (and so forth); when we come to the "Inquiring After the Illness" chapter, this will be fully distinguished.
