3.70

「以其至問疾」，二、明問疾。淨名為物所尊，具如前歎。斯之大眾莫不蒙恩，今既有疾，豈容不問？故諸王臣民皆來問疾。而但諸來者，皆是淨名現世知識，過去曾結四教之緣，機動致感，藉問疾為緣，故來問疾。

From "Because of this" down to "inquiring after the illness" is the second part: clarifying inquiring after the illness. Vimalakīrti was revered by beings, fully as praised before. Among this great assembly there was none who had not received his favor; now that he was ill, how could they not inquire? Therefore kings, ministers, and commoners all came to inquire after his illness. Yet all those who came were Vimalakīrti's acquaintances in the present life who had formed conditions with the four teachings in the past; their capacities were moved and elicited a response, and relying on inquiring after the illness as a condition, they came to inquire after his illness.
