3.77

問：別譬五陰，定屬何教？若三藏，不應炎幻為譬。若通教，不應沫泡芭蕉為譬。答：方等四教，雜譬非疑。《大論》云「聲聞經中或為利人說如幻等譬。」從多為論，各有宗徒。《大品》有時牒前二教說五陰，六譬十譬通譬五陰乃至一切種智。

Question: When they specifically serve as similes for the five aggregates, to which teaching do they definitively belong? If to the Tripiṭaka [teaching], mirage and illusion should not serve as similes. If to the shared teaching, foam, bubble, and plantain tree should not serve as similes. Answer: In the vaipulya [period], the four teachings are mixed, so mixed similes are not doubtful. The Dàzhìdù lùn says: “In the śrāvaka sūtras, for persons of sharp faculties, similes such as an illusion are sometimes spoken.” Arguing from what is predominant, each has its respective adherents. The Dàpǐn at times takes up the preceding two teachings to explain the five aggregates, and the six similes and ten similes universally serve as similes for the five aggregates up to the knowledge of all aspects.
