Question: How do non-self and emptiness differ? Answer: The four propositions are not fixed. First: Sentient beings are called empty, and the aggregates are called non-self; this means that internally, being devoid of a person, they are empty, and because phenomena lack autonomy, they are non-self. Second: The aggregates are called empty, and sentient beings are called non-self; the aggregates, being merely phenomena, are called empty, and sentient beings, being persons, are called non-self. Third: Both are called empty, like the two kinds of emptiness. Fourth: Both are called non-self, like the three kinds of non-self. In the present sūtra, what was clarified previously regarding the gate of emptiness mostly pertained to the two kinds of emptiness; what is clarified now regarding non-self pertains to the non-self of phenomena.
