From "Vimalakīrti" below: Fourth, Vimalakīrti consoles him. Subhūti relied on his understanding of emptiness to be without fear or difficulty; therefore, using the alms-begging as an occasion, [Vimalakīrti] wished to observe how his spiritual wisdom and practical function were. When questioned, he was bewildered, not knowing where to turn. However, Vimalakīrti's interrogation was originally intended to break his stagnation in emptiness and show him the Dharma he had not yet heard, not out of begrudging the food to deliberately trouble him; therefore he consoled him, bidding him to take the bowl. The text has three parts: first, consoling inquiry; second, Subhūti's reply; third, re-consoling and explaining. First, saying "Take your bowl, do not fear": Since he was not suddenly identical to the six masters, but merely had the fault of stagnating in emptiness, how could his mind be so startled, dejected, and bewildered as this? Saying "If an illusory person created by the Buddha were to interrogate you with these matters": This means the dharmakāya manifesting a response to interrogate him like this; how could there be any fear? Illusory matters are identical to emptiness; since he is foremost in understanding emptiness, and within emptiness there is no person, why should he fear?
