「時我世尊聞此茫然」者，自述迷惑驚疑不解。何者？三藏唯說生滅拙度，未曾聞佛無作四諦，無智不解是故茫然。「不識是何言，不知以何答」者，不識所說皆詮圓理，不知佛法權實開遮，是故不知以何答也。「便置鉢欲出其舍」者，既不成敬、不愜同悲，離此二途更無取法，所以置鉢出舍而去。

"At that time, World-Honoured One, when I heard this I was bewildered": He recounts his own confusion, alarm, doubt, and lack of understanding. Why? The Tripiṭaka teaches only the clumsy deliverance of arising and ceasing; he had never heard the Buddha's four noble truths of non-action, and lacking wisdom he did not understand, hence he was "bewildered". Regarding "not knowing what words these were, not knowing how to reply": He did not know that what was spoken all expressed the perfect principle, nor did he know the provisional and real, the opening and barring, of the Buddha's Dharma, and therefore he did not know how to reply. Regarding "I then set down the bowl and wished to leave his house": Since he could neither fulfill respect nor humble himself to be equal to compassion, and apart from these two ways there was no other method to take [the food], he set down the bowl and left the house.
