"One should take morsel food for the sake of destroying composite characteristics": third, refuting in terms of severing the origin of suffering. The origin is the aggregation of afflictions; according to the retribution received, one requires the four kinds of food. Originally, Kāśyapa severed the origin wishing to destroy this composite cause of origin, hence he sought morsel food to sustain his body and engage in contemplation. If he were in the stage of learning, the composite would not yet be exhausted, and he might beg for morsel food to sustain his body and sever it to exhaustion. Having now realized [nirvāṇa] with residue and the composite origin being exhausted, what is his purpose in begging for food again to sustain his body? If he said it was to destroy the composite nature of sentient beings, he should not have abandoned the wealthy nor entered into [nirvāṇa] without residue. A bodhisattva is not like this; having not yet exhausted the truth of the origin within and outside the realms, they should receive morsel food to sustain the body and destroy composite characteristics. If it is to convert beings, they should make no distinction between poor and wealthy, causing all to be like themselves, and should not hastily enter nirvāṇa.
