"One should receive that food for the sake of non-reception": fourth, refuting in terms of cultivating the path. Kāśyapa had, without contrivance, attained the fruit of not eating; he should receive food and drink to sustain his body and cultivate the Way, so that there is food, life, body, and the Way. If he were in the stage of learning, he would be permitted to receive that food to cultivate the path of not eating. Now his position was that of no-more-learning (aśaikṣa), the cause of not eating was accomplished; why should he receive it further? If it were to benefit beings and enable them to attain this cause, then he should not have abandoned the wealthy nor entered nirvāṇa. A bodhisattva, in order to cultivate the unconditioned cause of not eating of the truth of the path, receives that food to seek the fruit of not eating of great nirvāṇa. If it is to benefit beings and enable them to attain the cause and fruit of not eating, they should receive from both poor and wealthy alike. Furthermore, because sentient beings have not yet attained this cause and fruit, the bodhisattva dwells long in the world; in order to enable them to attain it, they should not enter nirvāṇa.
