From "At that time Vimalakīrti" below, third, directly recounting the matter of being rebuked. The text has five parts: first, taking the bowl and filling it with food; second, the rebuke proper; third, putting down the bowl and departing; fourth, Vimalakīrti consoling him; fifth, those who heard awakening to the Way. As for the first part: from the standpoint of phenomenal conduct, if a donor rebukes without giving food, it appears to be stinginess. Here, giving while rebuking shows that his mind is free of stinginess; it is only that the beggar's mind is mistaken, so out of pity he instructs him. If expressing the principle: going while holding an empty bowl signifies seeing only emptiness. Giving with a full bowl signifies using wonderful existence to rebuke him, showing that the principle is not empty. Therefore the Great Sūtra says: "Voice-hearers see emptiness, but do not see non-emptiness." The bodhisattva sees [both]; wishing to rebuke his clinging to emptiness and reveal non-emptiness to him, he took the empty bowl, filled it, and gave it to him.
