5.114

問：方便菩薩定一向須呵不？答：既未齊《法華》，恐未得全廢，顯佛正意故如前判。依方便教方便菩薩亦但呵病不呵其法，此須分別。若約行人則病法俱呵，法擬接於後人，未必須捨。

Question: Must provisional bodhisattvas invariably and without exception be rebuked? Answer: Since this is not yet equal to the Lotus Sūtra, it is feared that [provisional teachings] cannot yet be entirely discarded; to reveal the Buddha's correct intention, it was determined as above. Relying on the provisional teachings, for provisional bodhisattvas only the disease is rebuked and not their Dharma; a distinction must be made here. If assessed with respect to practitioners, then both the disease and the Dharma are rebuked; the Dharma is intended to receive and guide later persons, so it does not necessarily have to be abandoned.
