Question: Is the prajñā of the night of attaining the Way an alternative name for the Avataṃsaka, or is it a distinct teaching expounded separately? Answer: The Dàzhìdù lùn explains that there are two kinds of prajñā: first, that expounded in common with people of the two vehicles; second, that expounded not in common. That which is expounded not in common is like the Inconceivable Sūtra. If based on this text, it is merely an alternative name. Furthermore, a verse praising prajñā in the Dàzhìdù lùn states: "If one contemplates the Buddha, prajñā, and nirvāṇa in accordance with the Dharma, / these three are of one single characteristic, / in reality having no difference." If so, nirvāṇa is also an alternative name, so why only prajñā? Answer: The Avataṃsaka derives its name from the Great Vaipulya Buddha; prajñā takes its designation from wisdom; nirvāṇa receives its title from liberation. If based on the treatise's text, it is also without error in principle to take them as different names for different collections. However, not having seen an explicit text, it cannot yet be definitively decided.
