Question: If so, Maitreya is precisely the one in the position of succession, so he ought to reveal the deep; how could it be shallow? Answer: As a great person and superior, he must be commanded first. The Dharma should go from shallow to deep, so [the Buddha] opens the Buddha's knowledge and vision with respect to Maitreya. Furthermore, although ranks are revealed with respect to persons, the intention does not lie in shallow and deep. Why is that? In the round teaching, from the very first stage, the virtues of all the stages are fully complete; thus the initial opening is itself demonstrating, awakening, and entering. The revealing of ranks by the four persons is also like this; they are simply the four round ranks.
