5.61

「時維摩詰」下，三、正述被呵之事。文為二：一正述彈呵、二二比丘心得清淨。初文為七：一正彈呵、二勸除滅、三為解釋、四引佛語證、五覈問波離、六入真分判、七結成奉律。初文者，若約理懺則不煩涉事，事相紛紜何益於理。「無重增此二比丘罪」者，罪從想生，應除其想。波離強為分別是輕是重，如是羯磨此乃涉事，增妄擾心生重悔蓋障於定慧，是重增罪。

From "At that time, Vimalakīrti" down, third is directly recounting the event of being rebuked. The text has two parts: first, directly recounting the rebuke; second, the two monks' minds attaining purity. The first part has seven: first, directly rebuking; second, urging eradication; third, explaining for them; fourth, citing the Buddha's words as proof; fifth, cross-examining Upāli; sixth, entering truth to make judgments; seventh, concluding with upholding the vinaya. As for the first part: if one refers to repentance through principle, one does not bother with involvement in phenomena; what benefit to principle are chaotic phenomenal characteristics? "Do not further aggravate the offenses of these two monks": offenses arise from conceptualization, and their conceptualization should be eradicated. Upāli forcibly discriminated whether it was light or heavy, and such karmavācanā—this is involvement in phenomena, increasing delusion, agitating the mind, and generating the heavy hindrance of regret, which obstructs samādhi and wisdom; this is further aggravating the offenses.
