問：心之與根有何等異？答：知心只是他心智，凡小共有；知他根緣即道種智，別教始有，通教尚無，況復凡小。

Question: What is the difference between mind and faculties? Answer: Knowing the mind is merely the knowledge of others' minds, shared by ordinary beings and the small [vehicle]. Knowing the capacities and conditions of others is the knowledge of the aspects of the path, which only begins with the distinct teaching; even the shared teaching does not possess it, let alone ordinary beings and the small [vehicle].
