Fourth, regarding the gravity and lightness according to the lands: that is, the four lands differ. First, regarding the Land of Cohabitation: the four shares are the causal illness, and fragmented [birth-and-death] is the resultant illness. There are two kinds of this: first, defiled; second, pure. The defiled is grave, and the pure is light. Why? The defiled land of cohabitation completely possesses the five destinies. The resultant illness of the heavenly destiny is only general and without the particular; its causal illness is indeterminate. In the case of humans, animals, and ghosts, the causal and resultant, general and particular, more or less, accord with the meaning. In the hells, the resultant illness is only particular and without the general; the cause is also indeterminate. In the pure land of cohabitation, there is only the general and without the particular. Why? Although there are the four shares, there are no four destinies such as the ten evil acts and no grave four sufferings; therefore, the causal and resultant illnesses are only general and only light. Second, explaining the Land of Remainder: this is illness outside the triple realm. It is where the holy ones of the three vehicles, deluded about the single real truth and attached to the principle of biased emptiness, give rise to the four unconditioned shares and induce the fruit of change, which is also called the birth-and-death of expedient means. Those of the distinct and circular [teachings] who have completely severed delusions within the realm, but have not yet seen the Middle and have not yet severed fundamental ignorance, are all born in that land. Their burdens of affliction in cause and effect are identical with those of the two vehicles. These burdens of affliction are precisely the causal and resultant illnesses; there are only the general and particular of the distinct teaching, and no general and particular of the shared teaching.
