Question: If True Retribution has the causal illness of the four shares, does it also have the resultant illness of the four great elements and the four sufferings, or not? Answer: Since there is the birth-and-death of the intrinsic essence, how could there not be the four great elements of the intrinsic essence? Thus the Dàpǐn states: 'All dharmas converge into earth, up to converging and not converging; the other three great elements are also like this.' If the four great elements and four sufferings of the intrinsic essence are exhausted, that is precisely the wondrous form of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, clear, still, and ever abiding peacefully, not being shifted by birth-and-death. If the masters say that from Dharma Cloud to equal enlightenment there is no birth-and-death, how do they deal with the teachings? Furthermore, the text says: 'Because of ignorance there is craving, and thus my illness arises.' If the fundamental ignorance of the vajra-like equal enlightenment is not yet exhausted, then subtle causal and resultant illnesses will arise.
