Question: Illness is a phenomenon of conditioned accumulation, distress, and hindrance; how can it signify the virtue of liberation? Answer: This differs from the Tripiṭaka and Shared teachings, where the absence of afflictions and saṃsāra is called liberation. Here, the inconceivable expedient liberation merely undergoes afflictions and saṃsāra while remaining self-free from bondage, liberating others from all bonds. Thus the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: “Wherever buddhas and bodhisattvas tame sentient beings is called liberation.”
