From "Extensive learning" to "emptiness": third, explaining advancing practice through extensive learning. Though one possesses the wisdom of self and other, in actual practice one must advance in cultivation to make it round and ultimate. "Extensive learning is the place of awakening": the bodhisattva of the initial mind attains true retention of what is heard, hears the Buddha-dharma of the ten directions, destroys all false darkness, and extensive learning reveals and brings forth the detachment from the nature of letters; this is the place of awakening, because one can comply with and practice according to what is heard. "Subduing the mind is the place of awakening": The Yingluo [jing] states: "From the initial resolve up to the vajra summit, all is called patience of subduing." The initial mind completely subdues fundamental ignorance and advances to reveal the real; this is the place of awakening. The threefold contemplation in a single mind is precisely the correct contemplation of all dharmas. "The thirty-seven factors are the place of awakening": the bodhisattva at the initial mind attains the unconditioned factors of the path, can eliminate all false delusions of the eight inversions, and reveals the dharmakāya and liberation of the dharma-nature five skandhas, advancing in cultivation up to the attainment of great nirvāṇa; this is the place of awakening. The four truths within the realms and the three truths beyond the realms are all called conditioned, and one turns away from and renounces them. The immeasurable truth of cessation and the unconditioned path and cessation are the truly unconditioned. "The truths are the place of awakening": the five items below are the objective realms contemplated by the factors of the path. The bodhisattva of the initial mind can use the factors of the path to see the four sets of four truths, sever afflictions that delude regarding principle within and beyond the realms, and reveal the provisional and true principles; this is the place of awakening. Preaching the four sets of four truths, this is "not deceiving the world." "Dependent origination is the place of awakening": contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination has four aspects; the bodhisattva of the initial mind can use the unconditioned factors of the path to contemplate the three paths of dependent origination and attain the three kinds of bodhi; this is the place of awakening. If one contemplates dependent origination and sees the three buddha-natures, it is inexhaustible. "All afflictions are the place of awakening": the bodhisattva of the initial mind can use the factors of the path to contemplate the three poisons, not being stained by falsehood, and reveal the true Buddha-dharma; this is the place of awakening. They also know that afflictions as well as the Buddha-dharma are all ultimately empty. "Sentient beings are the place of awakening": the bodhisattva of the initial mind can use the factors of the path to contemplate the emptiness of sentient beings of the nine paths; when not seeing the marks of sentient beings, false delusions do not arise, and seeing the true nature of sentient beings is seeing the buddha-nature; this is the place of awakening. If one does not see a fixed nature in sentient beings, then self and non-self are non-dual; this is the meaning of true non-self. "All dharmas are the place of awakening": the bodhisattva of the initial mind can use the factors of the path to contemplate the emptiness of all aggregates, sense fields, and so forth, destroying inverted false delusions regarding all dharmas, revealing the five skandhas of buddha-nature, and attaining the five kinds of nirvāṇa; this is the place of awakening. They also know that all dharmas and nirvāṇa are empty.
