6.58

「所言」下，三、明被彈之事。文為八：一淨名覺悟持世、二淨名就魔索女、三魔驚懼欲去、四空聲勸捨、五魔捨女、六大士為女說法、七魔乞女、八大士還女。一、淨名覺悟者，持世不能自覺，良以緣修不逮，致被魔幻而不覺知。大士悟佛知見，自悟悟他，照圓極故，能發魔幻偽、示其是非。初示其非，「非帝釋也」。次示是魔欲壞正道，故言「嬈固汝耳」。

From "What was said" downward is, third, explaining the event of being rebuked. The text has eight parts: first, Vimalakīrti awakening Jagatīṃdhara; second, Vimalakīrti demanding the women from the māra; third, the māra being terrified and wishing to leave; fourth, a voice in the air urging relinquishment; fifth, the māra relinquishing the women; sixth, the mahāsattva preaching the Dharma for the women; seventh, the māra begging for the women back; eighth, the mahāsattva returning the women. First, Vimalakīrti awakening [him]: Jagatīṃdhara could not perceive it himself, truly because conditioned cultivation did not reach far enough, leading him to be deceived by the māra's illusion without being aware. The mahāsattva has awakened to the buddha-knowledge and vision, awakening himself and awakening others; because his illumination is consummate, he could expose the māra's illusion and deceit and show what was right and wrong. First, he showed what was wrong: "This is not Śakra." Next, he showed that it was a māra wishing to destroy the right path; hence he said: "He is merely bothering you."
