From "He replied" onward, third, Vimalakīrti answers. As for "joy of the Dharma": desire for all wholesome dharmas is its root; if there is delight and desire, that constitutes joy. It is like a person loving and thinking of parents and relatives, taking this as joy. If one is a disciple of the Buddha, one takes the Buddha in place of a father, the Dharma in place of a mother, the Saṅgha in place of relatives, and practice in place of wealth and possessions; that which is deeply enjoyed is the supramundane joy of the Dharma. The text has five parts: first, delighting in taking refuge in the Three Jewels; second, delighting in abandoning the truth of origination; third, delighting in contemplating the truth of suffering; fourth, delighting in cultivating the truth of the path; fifth, concluding the joy of the Dharma. If one can be like this, not only does one attain the joy of the Dharma in the causal stage, but later one attains the ultimate, constant joy of the truth of cessation, nirvāṇa. In the first passage, the Three Jewels of the four teachings, according to whatever one faithfully delights in, is itself the joy of the Dharma.
