"Delighting in leaving the five desires": second, delighting in abandoning the truth of origination. Origination is what should be severed, hence it says "delighting in leaving the five desires." The Lotus Sūtra clarifies that greed and desire are the root cause of all sufferings. Thus we know that the five desires are precisely origination. Just as a person recovers from an illness and immediately attains peace and joy, if one leaves the five desires, one immediately attains the joy of the Dharma. Abandoning origination in the four teachings varies according to capacity, but at first, when rebuking the heavenly maidens for clinging to the joy of the five desires, the Tripiṭaka [teaching] is mostly employed.
