6.84

問：但圓有法施，餘三亦有？答：於檀約觀亦有此義，但非圓普。又方便教門出沒，未必事明此義，故淨名施圓，欲顯入佛知見通達無礙，寄彈善得令時眾稟方便教者達此財施即成法施。

Question: Is the Dharma gift found only in the perfect [teaching], or is it present in the other three as well? Answer: Regarding contemplation in dāna, this meaning is also present, but it is not perfect and universal. Furthermore, the gates of expedient teachings emerge and submerge, and do not necessarily elucidate this meaning in actual fact. Therefore, Vimalakīrti administered the perfect [teaching], wishing to reveal the unimpeded thorough penetration of entering the buddha's knowledge and vision; he used the rebuke of Śāntamati as a vehicle to make the assembly at that time, who received the expedient teachings, realize that this material giving is itself the Dharma gift.
