From "At that time" below, second, is borrowing seats through spiritual powers. Above, he rebuked Śāriputra for merely seeking seats and not seeking the Dharma, and because of this expounded the Dharma so that gods and humans attained the path, but had not yet manifested inconceivable spiritual powers. If he did not provide seats, it would be like a poor person without wealth unable to make arrangements who scolds his guests. Now, borrowing seats through spiritual powers, he satisfies what Śāriputra thought of, making it the occasion to expound the inconceivable liberation. The text has six parts: first, asking Mañjuśrī where there are good seats; second, Mañjuśrī answering regarding the place of the seats; third, manifesting spiritual powers to borrow seats; fourth, King of Lamps sending the seats; fifth, the great assembly marveling and looking up; sixth, Vimalakīrti having the assembly take their seats. First, inquiring about the place: wishing to manifest inconceivable spiritual powers to arrange seats, he must accord with the minds of the guests; therefore, he first asks about a place with supremely marvelous seats. Understood according to the principle: those whom Mañjuśrī led are the capacities, and Vimalakīrti's responding to the capacities must accord and fit; therefore, he first inquires.
