7.91

「長者至床座耶」，二、問所念。身子雖生此念，眾生未盡知。將欲彈呵，故先問所念「為法來耶求床座耶」。若為床座，不名行人。若言為法，不應求座。故須覈問。若所念顯露，大眾同知，方可彈折。

From "Elder... [did you come for the Dharma or] for bed and seat?": second, asking about what was thought. Although Śāriputra generated this thought, the beings did not fully know it. About to rebuke him, [Vimalakīrti] therefore first asked about what he thought: "Did you come for the Dharma, or did you seek a bed and seat?" If for a bed and seat, he is not called a practitioner. If he says it is for the Dharma, he should not seek a seat. Therefore, he had to cross-examine him. Once the thought was laid bare and the great assembly knew it together, he could then rebuke and subdue him.
